The Leacock cafeteria was retrofitted with new equipment and supplies so that the grade 10 Hospitality and Tourism class can work in a commercial space. Thanks to grants from the school board and the planning and coordination of staff, The Lunch Box held it’s grand opening on Wednesday, April 10th.
Taught by Ms. Creary, the TFJ classes learn the basics of cooking, baking, health and safety, tourism, and preparing food for large scale events. The grade 10 students are learning a lot of important skills in the daily lessons and prepare towards a two-day-per-week service.
Running a cafeteria service takes a lot of time and effort. Staff like Mr. Hau (broadcast maintenance technician), Ms. Park (student teacher) and Silvia (one of our school-based safety monitors) all help a lot to keep things running smoothly with the students in time for lunch service.
SLCI welcomed many special guests from the school board, including our trustee Manna Wong and Superintendent Helen Fisher, for the ribbon cutting ceremony on opening day. On the menu was chicken souvlaki with pita, and homemade Greek salad. Also for sale were some sweet treats including banana crumb muffins and Ms. Creary’s infamous chocolate chip cookies. The food was well-received by everyone, and students look forward to what new item will be on the menu each week!
Check out the “School Scoop” segment of episode 10 LTV Weekly for a look at the grand opening.
